So I was reading about the firefox 1.0 launch...
here.
It really got me thinking. I don't want to be part of a huge software corporation (like microsoft). I want something small, intimate, like those guys at mozilla.org have. I like the idea of being a huge part of something like that, rather than just another cog in the wheel. Sure, it would be cool to work for Apple or Google or something, but I honestly think I'd have more fun if I start my own company or join someone else in starting something. Is that so wrong? I mean, I like software engineering and I like the idea of creating something that can genuinely improve peoples' lives. I'm not going to give that up for a higher salary. Now maybe I'm naive. I'm still in college, its possible. But I know one thing: I'm not going to work my ass off on something I don't like just to make more money. I think my Dad felt the same way, maybe. As an accountant, I know he interviewed with Arthur Anderson and probably other large accounting firms, but he didn't want that. He wanted to be part of something small and intimate. Like this. These guys a are small, close knit, but productive, group that have produced an innovative new software package for Mac and their office is a coffee shop. No, they don't pay rent. They meet every day, drink coffee all day, and work eight hours, right there in the coffee shop. The coffee shop people love them. I want to be part of something like that.
